Meeting the President
Phillip Lawrence is back with a new entry to update us about his season in Ireland and to talk about his meeting the President of Ireland.
This is the start of the new year and the final 3 months in Ireland for me. We won our first game of the new year against KUBS, a team we beat in the first game of the season. The next weekend we started to play in Irish National Cup, which is a new experience for me as a rookie. The national cup is traditional of all European leagues. It’s basically a single game elimination tournament with all the best Irish teams that usually takes during the middle of the season. It’s a showcase for teams and the league, as the winner get a trophy and usually some type of bonus. My team made it all the way to the semi-finals but eventually lost a hard fought game too soon to be cup champions, Griffith Swords Thunder.
After losing in the semi-finals, we had the next weekend off due to the championship being played. I was fortunate enough to get hooked up with VIP tickets to the game and also go to the President of Ireland’s reception where I would get the opportunity to meet the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins. In a time where back home in America President Trump presidency has been under so much controversy, it was cool to see another country’s leader. And also it’s rare opportunity to meet a world leader.
The reception was a good time, there were light refreshments and drinks and a good amount of people. President Higgins arrived and gave a few remarks. What really caught me by surprise was that there was not much security with him. There were only 2 secret service people with him, but it was relatively chilled. They let people take pictures and come up and talk to him. I was able to meet and have a few words with him and I invited him to one of our home games. It was definitely a good experience meeting the President of a different country.
