Thanksgiving in Germany
Derrick Allen is in the 14th year of his journey in European basketball. He is currently playing with RASTA Vechta of the EasyCredit Basketball Bundesliga.
As we all know, Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season. It’s a time to be with family and friends. Fellowship with loved ones, eat great food and watch football. For the normal working American, that’s what will happen.
But for American basketball players playing abroad, whether that would be in Europe, Asia, or Latin America, we don’t get to have that luxury of a four-day Thanksgiving weekend. All of us sacrifice a lot by playing abroad, and we miss a lot important holidays. We miss great family moments because of our job. Although we can’t enjoy Thanksgiving in the States with our family and friends, most of us are just happy with some type of Thanksgiving meal that gives us some feeling of being home.
Our team was lucky enough to have a Thanksgiving gathering! Cooked by our lovely wives, our German teammates enjoyed the Thanksgiving meal with us as well, so they can know how special that day is to us, and we have a piece of home away from home that day. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.
